A New Year is upon us

What are you looking forward to for 2008? Any new or upcoming technologies? Anything you’ve resolved to learning or exploring this year? I’d love to hear what you are looking forward to this year.

For myself, I am looking forward to doing more Seam development. My ATG day-job has been eating a lot of my time lately, and I haven’t been able to work with Seam as much as I have been in the past. In particular I want to checkout the PDF generation.

I’m also torn about Flex. It sounds like a very useful technology, although I admit I only have a high level understanding of what it is at this point. However, I have an ingrained aversion to too much Flash. There are search-ability, accessibility, and performance issues. There are a ton of Flash sites out there, which while not DOING much, manage to totally pin my dual-core 2.4 GHz computer with 4 GB of ram. I’m not talking about high res video, or crazy data crunching. Just very simple front ends like you could do easily with Javascript, except it’s completely eating all of my CPU. Makes me crazy. It could be that those are just poorly implemented examples, but I see that more often than not. Combine that with issues with Google indexing and accessibility and I tend to shy away from Flash technology in general. We’ll see.

I’m hoping to use some recent Java stuff this year. My current day job project is stuck on 4+ year old tech running on jdk 1.4. I miss 1.5 and I miss the current ATG versions.

2008 will hopefully be the year of entrepreneurship:) I’ve had a number of small companies that I’ve founded or co-founded over the years, but I’m hoping that 2008 will be the year that I can transition to supporting myself from my own projects, not being an employee (or contractor) on someone else’s.

So what about you?
